Living Green in an Apartment

There are many things residents can do who live in an apartments to be green and help the environment.

The one thing that makes renting better than home ownership is that it is easier to live close to your job. The closer you live to work, the less pollution is generated getting to and from your job. And with shorter commutes you get more time to be with your friends and family. Try to find an apartment that is located near transit stations (bus, train, light-rail, airport). You can also look for apartment that provide eco-friendly resources like extra recycling bins, native plant gardens, uses low VOC paint, is smoke-free, and other resources.Look for an apartment that is near local shops so you can walk to the store to get groceries, food, and other common items.

The most obvious things renters can do is to reduce, re-use and recycle. If your building does not have a recycling program, look into starting one or find the nearest recycling drop center. Get to know your neighbors so if you have items you no longer need you can see if they would want it. You can also do simple things like

  • utilizing reusable bags,
  • buying and using eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products,
  • remove yourself from junk mail lists
  • put recycling containers by your mail box
  • use Fen Shui in your apartment
  • start a building club so everyone can get to know each other

There are also many things you can do to impact your energy bill, including:

  • If you’re not using a light, turn it off as you leave the room. Plus, try using energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs that help reduce your electric bill and provide light many times longer.
  • When using air conditioners in the summer, be sure to only keep the unit on when you’re home or when absolutely necessary.
  • Another great way to lower your electric bill and save energy is to unplug your electrical appliances when you’re not using them. Or, plug your appliances into a power strip and the turn the power strip off when the appliances aren’t in use!
  • Refrigerators do use a lot of electricity. Be sure not to set the temperature in your refrigerator too cold.

Can you compost in your apartment? Yes, make a worm compost bin. You can even work with the owner and landlord of the building to install low flow water devices. Another important thing is to let your landlord know when there are water leaks, or if your apartment is too hot. They can then fix these items, helping our environment by not wasting its resources.

Women’s Spring Fashion – 3 Big Trends Right Now

This spring, fashion comes together with bright colors, florals, and bold patterns. The spring trends are a bouquet of beautiful patterns and prints, with jolts of color from electric yellow to brilliant red and magenta. Khaki and neutrals balance the picture, and are practical and chic for the office or for travel.

As the weather warms up, you can just feel yourself coming alive in the dappled light. Here’s how to get the most of these beautiful trends:

1. Spring bouquets: an artist’s bouquet of flowers awaits you, with multicolored flowers scattered everywhere. Billowy poppies, bold graphic flowers, and mixed florals adorn frock of all types. Meanwhile, flower pins, flower print chintz open-toed shoes, and flower appliqué sandals compete for attention. Keep your flower to one clothing item or accessory to avoid flower overkill.

2. Color shock ruled the runway, in vivid hues in everything from long, hippy-type flowered gowns to summer dresses where a bright jolt of color fades to a pale color. Flaming colors such as orange and electric blue are sure to awaken us from our winter doldrums!

3. Khaki and neutrals are a natural choice for trekking into spring and summer. Safari jackets, shirts and accessories such as attaché bags and tote bags complete the look. Updated for the 21st century urban adventurer, the safari look is classic travel wear for women and men. Its hallmarks include patch pockets, epaulets, belts and buttons. Since the natural look is also big now, this natural color is popular and practical. Just be sure to call it taupe, sand, or khaki – anything

What is Avant-Garde Fashion?

According to the dictionary, the avant-garde current it is an artistic current which fights against the already known and accepted forms and traditions, suggesting a revolutionary formula. In other words, this avant-garde may be regarded as an artistic innovative movement, which came out from a spirit of negation and revolt against certain traditionalism. It has become a synonym of innovation, progress and rebellion.

In fashion, the avant-garde style is defined through its personality. Many designers have been asked to define this style and they all added a certain term to define it: sophisticated, mysterious, intimidating, intriguing, striking. The accessories have to be very modern, unusual, but elegant. All clothes should be matched with hats, belts or shoes in the most unusual shapes.

The models may intimidate because what they wear is beyond a normal image. Avant-garde fashion means a little bit of theatre. Most of the time, the clothes cannot be worn in the street because they belong to a flamboyant style. They are very innovative and can be a bit shocking. Somehow, this style does not refer only to fashion. It means a mixture between fashion and art.The avant-garde fashion teaches women to have a certain attitude.

Avant-garde clothes mean unusual ones, which catch the eye and does not let you fade in the crowd. In fact, when we discuss about avant-garde fashion, we should not talk only about clothes. In the end, the result of the avant-garde has to be a whole form. For this reason, the make-up has to go hand in hand with the clothes.

The make-up has to express something new, unexpected, and even exotic. A niche for the avant-garde style in fashion was connected to men and the items designed especially for them.

At the beginning, women were the perfect models to underline these innovative ideas. Little by little, the designers extended upon men. First of all, they wanted to surprise through their clothes, later on every little detail mattered. One example may be the boots designed especially for them. A mixture of styles, the first tendency towards rejection and then the craziness of wearing them are some of the reactions encountered.

Hippie Fashion Statements Yesterday and Today

When considering hippie fashion one must look at the evolution of the statements made by it over the last several decades. What was originally a statement against corporate America, hippie clothing has become corporate America in modern times. However, the statements of the 60s can still be valid.

Evolving out of the Beatnik movement of the 50s, the teens and young adults between the ages of 15 and 25 in the 60s led a counter culture revolution against all the traditions they knew. On every front society was assaulted by hippie ideals. The clothes they wore helped to unite them and make them stronger. Today these same clothes announce that many of their ideas have become mainstream, having been accepted in large part by the populace of America.

The 1960s fashions and values had a lasting impact on culture, influenced music, television, cinema, literature, and the arts in many ways. Now assimilated into our society, we see things like alternative arts, street theatre, folk music, and psychedelic rock as classics from the hippie era.

We see other signs as well, like health food stores, music festivals, and relaxed sexual mores.

These bohemians made major efforts to effect change which we see everywhere. They attempted to express themselves through protests and new ways of communicating. They tried to apply their vision of the world and life to everything around them.

Hippie fashion history is noted as being the most violent and radical shift in fashion in modern times. The fashion look was part of a protest waged against capitalism. Because of this they were determined not to buy fashion from the designers who were making money off of it. They chose simple clothing, or repurposed clothes they could buy cheap at second hand stores. Partly because they were purists and partly because capitalism included middle men, they chose more natural type fibers, like cotton and wool. They made their own clothes as well, sewing and crafting from braided hippie headbands to knit and crochet vests.

These hippie clothes became fashion statements against all these things and many more, certainly against the war.

The hippie dress, skirt and pants made of patchwork also became a part of the statement because it was repurposing material and fabric, reusing it rather than putting more money in the wallet of The Man, corporate America.

Now these clothes are part of the hippie costumes that speak of the 60’s fashion we’ve come to associate with freedom, and rebellion.

If you want to learn more about hippie fashion, look at some hippie pictures. You’ll see a pattern that includes patchwork, bell bottom jeans, embroidered shirts and skirts, wrap around skirts, all kinds of things made of blue jeans, tie dye everything, headbands, glasses, vests and more.

The hippie fashion was mostly unisex. Both men and women wore their hair long. And women stopped wearing makeup. Women’s dresses were loose, had low necklines and were extremely short.

Many of the hippie fashions were borrowed from other cultures, but they have had lasting impact on our culture. They might be made of hemp, and the meanings may have changed, but the fashion is still in place.

Go Green With HHO Kits!

Everyone is talking about going green, even our friendly post office is printing go green stamps. With so many vehicles on the road and all the pollution especially in the big cities, we should all do our part in going green.

HHO Kits

One way is to have a hydrogen cell kit installed on your vehicle. It is very safe, will not void your warranty, works with gas and diesel motors, works on any size or type vehicle, and it will increase your mileage by 40%-60%.

How it works to help clean up our air quality is: When hydrogen is introduced into your engine it cleans the air by burning the excess hydrocarbon. When the excess hydrocarbon burns, you start pushing oxygen instead of carbon dioxide out your tail pipe. Then you have pure oxygen coming out instead of air killing carbon dioxide. This is a great way to go green with using a hydrogen cell kit.

Computers Off

Other ways to help go green are: Turning your computers completely off at night. This truly is an internet world, and everyone is online for one reason or another. When we go to sleep, your computer needs to sleep also. By turning it completely off will save on it and power.

Besides everyone having a computer, we all have printers. There is a lot of wasted paper when it comes to printing. Instead of just throwing it away, use both sides of it. You can use it for making notes, cut it up for a scratch pad, or let your children use it for drawing on.

Stop getting bank statements and start doing all your banking online. You can save a lot of paper by not getting bank statements and by not writing checks. Like I said earlier everything is internet now days, so do your banking online also.

Eggs & Hot Water

Most everyone eats eggs, so save your egg cartons. You can use the Styrofoam ones for putting paint in, as little paint wells. You can use them to start seeds for your garden. We use to cut them up and decorate them for Christmas ornaments. There are a lot of little crafts you can make out of them and your children will have fun doing it.

We all like a good hot shower, but if you lower your hot water temperature you will save a lot on your power bill. Instead of using hot water for your laundry, wash in cold. Your clothes will come out just as clean and they have detergent out especially for cold water wash now.

Tires & Lights

Always check the air pressure in your tires. Keeping your tire pressure where it should be will help your vehicle run more miles on less gas. And remember the Hydro cell Kit will increase your mileage helping keep money in your pocket book every time you fill up at a gas station.

We all like and need good lighting in our homes, but we should all make sure our lights are fluorescent bulbs. If every home in the United States would change all of their light bulbs to fluorescent bulbs, it would be equivalent to taking one million vehicles off the streets.

These are just a few ideas to help go green and do your part in making our world a better place to live. It is never to late to start right now and hope that our future generations will have a clean world to live in.

Fashion Tips – Buying Costume Jewelry

Costume jewelry has made a major comeback in recent years, with high street shops carrying their own ranges to complement their clothing and more and more fashion-conscious customers investing in unusual pieces as part of their style. So why should you join the bandwagon? First of all, costume jewelry can finish a look to perfection, meaning that you look great every day. It’s available in all colours, shapes and sizes; there’s no limit to the designs so whatever look you’re going for, there’s something to match. Secondly, it can transform an outfit; from kitsch plastic to glamorous diamante you can make the same clothes look completely different.

Thirdly, it can be as expensive or inexpensive as you like. From a few pounds for high street jewelry to hundreds for something from a famous designer, your budget isn’t dictated by the worth of the materials. Modern technology means that costume jewelry can be produced that mimics the real thing, so you can even have diamond look-alikes for a tiny fraction of the cost.

When it comes to buying imitation jewelry, there are as many places to look as there are designs available. High street shops of course all carry their own ranges, but if you’re looking for something a little different you’ll have to look further afield. Costume jewelry has been in production for decades, and styles reflect the fashion of the times. From art nouveau to 50’s kitsch, vintage pieces can be picked up in second hand shops everywhere. Some specialise in jewelry and will give you a lot of information about where the piece was made and the era it came from. These tend to carry more high-end pieces, focusing on famous designs or iconic styles.

Other second-hand shops will carry a smaller selection and these may be more reasonably-priced. Like a lot of thrift-shop goods, you might have to search through them to find a really special item, but if you do it’s worth it.

Another place to find costume pieces is at car boot sales; people have all sorts of bits and pieces in their homes to sell, and they often don’t know much about them. It’s a great place to pick up bargains and well worth a look.

Finally, the internet can be a great resource. Take a look at eBay for vintage jewelry, or check out internet shops to buy modern costume jewelry online. Just like high street retailers, internet sellers have their own ranges that are updated often. They’ll source their products from all over the world so you might find more unusual styles than you would elsewhere.

Vintage jewelry tended to imitate the real thing, providing a cheaper alternative to diamonds and gold. Although modern diamante jewelry serves the same purpose, in recent decades costume jewelry design has become more focussed on style and making a statement. Brightly-coloured plastic pieces for example are a modern invention, so antique shops won’t be the right place to look if that’s what you’re after. Costume jewelry however is always a bargain, and with enough searching you can find stunning examples to match your look.

Is Your Business Going Green?

In these uncertain economic times, a business needs to be sure that it is keeping up with the trends. If a service, manufacturing, or sales firm is seen as being old-fashioned or behind the curve in any way, profits can suffer. One of the most important trends for businesses to be aware of, for many reasons, is the environmentally friendly trend – a business going green.

Most people think of recycling when they hear about something or someone going green. And of course that’s a big part of the whole environmentally accountable movement. Recycling can be as simple as having an aluminum can container in the break room, or it can be an integral part of a manufacturing system in which waste from a process is disposed of in an ecologically and economically sound manner. It’s also important to make sure your employees are on board with the effort, and are understanding of and genuinely involved in your business going green.

Another way that a business can be environmentally responsible is in the type of materials used for packing and shipping their products. Recyclable containers and shipping materials are now available for almost any conceivable use, and your customers will notice how you are making an effort to clean up your act. Word does get around, and the reputation of your business will be kicked up a notch by going green in the packing and shipping department.

It may be an unseen area for most of your customers and even some of your employees, but using green products in a service business and raw materials that are as environmentally friendly as possible in a manufacturing concern will yield benefits in the long run. Again, the public image of your business can’t help but get a boost when you let folks know how you are making an effort to keep your business going green, from the front door to the loading dock. And for a service business, the use of green products for cleaning and other industrial purposes can accomplish the same feat – getting with the program for the new millennium. We all need to understand and recognize the importance of a business going green, and the modern firm can set a good example and still turn a profit.

We suggest businesses strive to use green cleaning products that are plant-based, free from petroleum, and use cleaners and detergents made from renewable, biodegradable resources, making these products good for the environment. Businesses don’t have to sacrifice clean to be natural! Care for your business, employees, and the earth in the Eco-friendly way!

The Green Clothing Fashion – Waste Nothing

The concept of a green planet should not only be promoted by environmentalists solely, but also be experimented by everyone on earth. For the fashionistas, the best way to support the green environment concept is the wear those green fashion clothing. To help fashionistas to be green, the fashion designer Eliza Starbuck has put forward one zero-watch clothing line, fashionable and environmental friendly. Let’s take a look together in the below.

Named as the Bright Young Things clothing line, the entire collection is made according to the zero waste principle. Each of them comprises three key pieces. Each piece is styled with no cutting pieces and each part is made with an entire piece of cloth.

The collection is inspired by two seemingly separate fashion concepts, the 1920’s flappers and the Victorian evening wear. The collection creates two characteristic looks, one themed in beige and dark blue while one themed in deep purple. The plate in front is femininely soft and the exposure of the shoulders is charmingly sexy. Eliza Starbuck claims it a distinctive aesthetic fit for the “lady of the 21st century”. With the exquisite view of the line, one would find it hard to disagree with her claim.

As a newly designed fashion artwork, this Eliza Starbuck Bright Young Things fashion clothing line is to be presented at the Amsterdam’s International Fashion Week. Let’s wait and take a full enjoyment of this environmental friendly artwork.

Also, what we should take from the line is not only its fashion element, but also the effort put in it to create a green environment. All of us should experiment ourselves to create a green planet.

4 Exciting New Green Technologies

Green communities and residential buildings are gaining popularity all across the nation. As the green housing movement gains momentum, developers and architects are rolling out exciting new green technologies and features. Below are four communities that are changing the “green” movement for the better.

1. Porous Streets & Sidewalks

Pringle Creek, a 132 home development in Salem, Oregon is being built with entirely porous streets and sidewalks. Porous surfaces allow 90% of rainwater to run back into the surrounding soil. This dramatically cuts down on the negative effects that polluted storm water runoff can have on surrounding river and lake systems. The community also captures excess rain water in storage tanks for use on community gardens.

2. Homes Frames Made From Recycled Steel

Sonoma Mountain Village in Rohnert Park, California is taking a whole new approach to building homes. The community will feature an on site solar power facility where home frames are made from recycled steel. Each of the communities 1,900 homes will use the equivalent of 6 SUV’s worth of recycled steel and will save 40 trees.

3. Living Completely Off The Grid

Quay Valley, a 50,000 home community still in the conceptual stages in Kings County, California have laid out an extraordinary plan in regards to power. Quay Valley aims to be the first entirely solar powered development in the world. They hope to accomplish this through the construction of three, 100 acre solar arrays. The developer of the community actually estimates that the panels will produce excess electricity which will be sold back to the neighboring townships.

4. Maximizing The Sunlight

Enso, a stunning new 19 story condo tower in downtown Seattle, Washington aims to take advantage of natural sunlight. Every unit features floor to ceiling windows with a large “curtain wall”. The window wall is designed to let abundant light into the apartments without overheating them through the use of insulated glass and a retractable curtain. Maximizing sunlight exposure can help to keep units much warmer in the winter months and dramatically cut down on the need for artificial lighting.
